Will Any Lens Fit Any Camera

SLR cameras can change their lenses. Sometimes, old lenses can work on new cameras

It depends on the photographic camera brand. Many companies have recently changed the way their lenses and cameras fit together, and so older lenses won't fit or won't exercise everything they should. The list below tells the story for each brand. Delight be careful and bank check your camera and lens manual kickoff, though - you lot can damage your camera or lens by plumbing equipment the wrong ones together.

Old flick SLR lenses change a lilliputian when you put them on most digital SLRs. They really zoom in a chip farther, every bit digital SLRs only see the center one-half of the moving picture. This is rarely a problem for long zoom lenses, as they volition zoom fifty-fifty further on a digital SLR. But it is a problem for mural photographers and real-estate agents who need broad-angle lenses, every bit the lenses won't see as wide as they did earlier. Most companies now make a new serial of lenses specifically for digital SLRs to fix this.

If yous take quondam lenses that you need to focus by hand and they fit on a new autofocus SLR, you'll nevertheless take to focus by hand.

Are onetime manual-focus lenses whatever practiced on a modernistic digital SLR or mirrorless camera?

It depends what y'all shoot.

If you shoot things that don't move - landscapes or withal-life scenes - they're very good, and an absolute bargain to kicking. You tin can go excellent old $500 lenses for $20 at the local pawn shop. If you shoot moving things, similar children playing, information technology'southward a dissimilar story. At first I took the macho arroyo, thinking that I'd been focusing by hand for years, so it won't be a problem to carry on. I was wrong. Almost non-professional person digital SLRs take small, dim viewfinders (to go on the cost of the camera downwards), making manual focusing much harder than it always was with film cameras. Autofocus is more than but a convenience these days.

There'due south another small-scale challenge to using old movie lenses on a modernistic digital camera: the sensors in digital cameras have drinking glass in front of them, but moving picture didn't. The glass changes the path of the low-cal just a tiny scrap, and means that lenses designed for moving-picture show can't give their best on digital cameras. It'south a very small effect, and most people would never notice. It degrades the edges of the picture much more than the middle, and the size of the problem depends on 2 things: the thickness of the glass in front of the sensor of your photographic camera (called the "sensor stack" - the thinner the amend), and how parrallel the light rays are coming from the lens (measured by the lens' "get out pupil altitude" the longer the better). Unlike camera brands have unlike thicknesses of sensor stack, so lenses for one brand may not requite their best if used on another brand with an adaptor. If yous want the geeky details, this page is the authority.

What'due south the best digital camera for my old lenses?

Currently, the Sony a7 MkII is the champion for breathing life into old lenses. It makes focusing quondam lenses easier than it was on their original film cameras due to its bright, stabilised, enlargeable viewfinder. You tin zoom into the viewfinder live to get perfect focus - and still run into what y'all're doing because the image is stabilised. The picture show quality is excellent, the stabiliser counteracts your wobble, and as a total-frame photographic camera you lot become the full view of the lens. It'due south relatively affordable now the A7 MkIII is out (and few of the advantages of the MkIII version apply to old lenses). Adaptors are available for just about every brand and fit of lens. This page gives all the details of Sony lens adaptors. Choose an adaptor that lets you control the discontinuity of your lens if 1 is available, or information technology will be a pain to apply. If you lot have Nikon-fit, or Pentax-fit lenses, consider instead getting a Nikon or Pentax camera. Just if they're manual focus lenses, the Sony might exist merely as adept. The only real downside is that you lot'll soon want to become modern lenses for it, as information technology volition show up how comparatively archaic older lenses were.

Catechism

Any Catechism "EF" lens made after 1987 will fit whatsoever Catechism digital SLR, but none of the erstwhile "FD" mount lenses fabricated before 1987 volition fit. The "EF" lenses accept electrical contacts at the back where they join the camera. Take intendance to keep these contacts clean, or you tin become odd behaviour from the photographic camera. Canon as well brand a series of smaller "EF-S" lenses that are designed merely for their digital SLRs, and they fit on the EOS models 100D, 200D, 250D, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 600D, 650D, 700D, 750D, 760D, 800D, 1000D, 1100D, 1200D, 1300D, 1500D, 2000D, 3000D, 4000D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, 70D, 77D, 80D, 90D, 7D and 7DMkII  (just non on the older D30, D60 or 10D). Don't put these newer "EF-S" lenses on an former picture camera or a 1D series, 5D serial or 6D series - if information technology fits, it volition pause the camera's mirror.

Catechism has 2 separate mirrorless lens mounts: EOS-M for the smaller, cheaper half-frame mirrorless cameras, and RF for the bigger, better full-frame mirrorless cameras. Any Canon EF DSLR lens will work perfectly with either system with the correct Canon adaptor, while the smaller EF-Southward lenses can only fit EOS-M cameras through the "Mount adaptor EF-EOS M". EF-South lenses tin't work on RF cameras. Canon's M and RF lenses are orphans, only fitting on mirrorless cameras with Thou and RF mounts respectively. If you have an RF mirrorless photographic camera, you can choose the newer RF lenses or older EF lenses with an adaptor. Both lens ranges are excellent.

Nikon

Nikon accept kept the same "F mountain" coupling for nigh 60 years, so just about all lenses will fit (although they may not exercise everything), simply introducing a new, bigger "Z mount" for Nikon mirrorless cameras in 2018. With an adaptor, F mount lenses will fit on Z mountain cameras, just it might be more than trouble than it's worth - see below. Today, I'm happily using a 40-twelvemonth-onetime lens on my professional person Nikon digital SLR... just I have to focus it myself. Except for the five new "AF-P" lenses, any Nikon autofocus lens volition focus automatically on any Nikon digital SLR except on the Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D3500, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600. These fourteen SLRs will only autofocus with newer lenses called "AF-South" lenses. The upkeep range of "AF-P" lenses accept a new type of focus motor and they won't focus at all (even in manual focus) with pre-2013 Nikons. The AF-P lenses only piece of work perfectly with D500, D3300, D3400, D3500, D5300, D5400, D5500, D5600, D7500 and newer cameras. The AF-P lenses work with "limited part" with the following cameras (and we're trying to find out from Nikon exactly what "express function" ways - so far it seems that autofocus is OK, simply manual focus doesn't work): D5, D810, Df, D750, D5200, D7100, D7200. To misfile the issue further, not all lenses let all functions on all cameras. This tabular array gives the details. Nikon instruction manuals usually accept huge tables explaining what will and won't piece of work together. If you have older equipment, make sure you read them.

The new Nikon Z mount takes all old Nikon lenses using the FTZ ("F to Z") adaptor. It works perfectly with AF-South, AF-I and AF-P lenses. Simply with AF-D and AF lenses you lose autofocus, plus (like with Nikon transmission focus lenses such as AI, AI-South and AI-D and AE lenses), you accept to open up and close the aperture manually. But transmission focus is easier through the Z cameras' stabilised, enlargeable electronic viewfinder than it e'er was on motion picture cameras.

Pentax and Samsung

Lenses from 1975 will fit. Autofocus lenses from 1987 will also focus automatically, lenses from 2004 will offer all features. This page gives all the gory detais. The Pentax Thousand-01 is an oddity: a mirrorless photographic camera that works well with all Pentax lenses. It's a bargain fashion to get great-quality landscapes at a tiny price with second-hand Pentax lenses, simply older lenses won't autofocus, and so I wouldn't recommend this approach for shooting fast moving things. Samsung recently discontinued their excellent NX series.

Olympus

No... Olympus changed everything in 2003 with their "Four Thirds" system. Quondam Olympus SLR lenses won't fit. You can get an adaptor to use them, but you'll lose most features. To confuse matters farther, Olympus also make cameras that accept the new "Micro Iv Thirds" system...

Micro Four Thirds cameras (e.thousand. Panasonic Lumix Chiliad-serial, and Olympus Eastward-series)

Introduced in 2008 to finally shrink the SLR, Micro Four Thirds lenses are smaller than traditional SLR lenses because they don't have to leave room behind them for a mirror. Original "Four Thirds" lenses will fit (with an adaptor), but not all of them focus properly with micro-4-thirds cameras. Bank check the individual manuals to see. Panasonic and Olympus lenses are interchangeable between the ii brands with just minor changes. Olympus lenses stabilise better on Olympus cameras, and Panasonic cameras focus and stabilise amend with Panasonic lenses.

Other "Mirrorless SLR" cameras (e.g. Sony alpha, Samsung NX, Nikon J and V, Fuji X)

Sony Eastward mount, Fuji X mount, and Samsung NX mount (now discontinued) are new systems each with their ain new lenses that are non uniform with anything else. Why have they done this? The cameras and lenses are small... very small. Only in that location are plenty of adaptors that volition let yous use older lenses manually. Metabones adaptors are neat; FotodioX are cheaper, and take a fun "tilt" adaptor, that lets you lot clumsily alter the plane of focus for a different await. The Metabones "Speed Booster" adaptors are a novelty: they make the lenses give the aforementioned view that they did on film cameras, with an added bonues that they permit more light in. Once there are cameras that tin focus them quickly, they could give new life to good onetime lenses.

Sony/Minolta/Konica-Minolta DSLRs

Any autofocus Minolta lens made later 1985 will fit and should give total (or almost total) functionality on whatever Sony or Minolta SLR. Konica-Minolta'southward camera business was bought by Sony in 2006.

Sony a7, a7R, a7S, a7II, a7III, a7RII, a7RIII, a7RIV, a9

These full-frame mirrorless cameras get a special mention, as they are particularly uniform with other brands of lens - indeed Sony seems to exist marketing them to tempt users of other lenses to defect to Sony (they're often sold with a costless Metabones adaptor). The latest a7RIII and a7RIV requite good autofocus with Canon lenses, with adaptors for other brands on the style. We've tested them with Catechism lenses and found them to be excellent for stationary subjects, but not quite good plenty for moving subjects. Information technology's only but backside focus on Catechism cameras for Canon lenses. Hopefully, 1 more than generation of photographic camera and information technology will be 100% percent competitive. It's a big bargain for the states. Because nosotros teach all photographic camera brands on our photography courses, we have all brands of lens. The a7RV might let all our photographers use their favourite make lenses on one type of camera. The a9 is Sony'southward sports-oriented camera, so while information technology has breathtaking focus speed, it probably doesn't make sense to spend so much on a camera then slow information technology down by using lenses through an adaptor. This folio is a practiced starting betoken to using other lenses on Sony cameras.

Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Vivitar

These contained brands of lens are made to mount on cameras from just one manufacturer. In theory, they should exist as compatible as the lenses of the photographic camera manufacturer of the same vintage. But in exercise, it'south not always true. I've seen several cases of old independent lenses not focusing accurately on new digital cameras, in means that can't be corrected hands in a service heart. Or just non working at all. New independent lenses won't have whatever such bug... if they exercise, the manufacturer will prepare them.

This information is for guidance but, and applies to most consumer lenses. You lot can impairment your camera by fitting the wrong type of lens to it. Some lenses volition break the camera's mirror; others may harm the electrical contacts. So please be careful and check your camera or lens transmission first. Some avant-garde functions have only recently been invented (such as the lens telling the camera where it is focused), then older lenses seem to work perfectly, but might non exist making total use of the latest features on an SLR. Links to other sites are provided in skillful faith, but we tin can't take responsibility for their accuracy.
